She also took ballet lessons at the Santa Monica Playhouse as a child. In the year 1996, she got a role as a guest on the TV drama Party of Five. Even though she was accepted by New York University, Kate Hudson was more focused on becoming a showbiz entrepreneur than a degree. After a few minor roles in films, she was offered the part that would turn into an important part of her career. She was chosen to play Penny Lane in the comedy-drama film Almost Famous. In spite of being a box office disappointment it received positive critiques from critics, and it made a name for Kate as an actor in the American film industry.
